Every file and folder on a Mac OS X hard drive has a set of permissions —settings that determine
which user(s) have access to each item, and exactly what that access is.
If you are experiencing trouble logging in to your account, printing, launching applications,
or even starting up your Mac, it may be necessary to repair the permisions.
The Mac OS has a built in app name "Disk Utility," that is designed to verify and repair many of these
permissions.
Click on the Magnifying Glass icon in the upper right of your screen,
or hold down the Command Key while pressing the Spacebar.
Type in "Disk Utility" and run the app.
You will see a list of the Hard Drives and Volumes on your computer.
Select the name of the volume that contains your Operating System.
Then click "Verify Disk Permissions."
When the app is done Verifying, any discrepancies found will be listed in the text box in the middle of the right side.
Click on "Repair Disk Permissions."
Lastly, restart your computer and the process is complete.
